12-27 DATES, ANNIVERSARIES, and EVENTS

B. 12-27-1901, Marlene Dietrich, film actor and entertainer who symbolized sophistication and daring sensuality in German and American films. Her studio blocked an Academy Award nomination for her work in Witness for the Prosecution because it didn't want the ending to be made public. She was nominated for her first American film Morocco (1930/31). She was probably a courier in World War II and marched beside Charles DeGaulle in the Parisian victory parade. She was adamantly anti-Nazi and Adolph Hitler put a price on her head. Since her death, a number of biographies have emphasized her many affairs with both men and women.

B. 12-27-1927, Anne Armstrong, U.S. ambassador to Great Britain (Court of St. James) under President Gerald Ford. Won the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1987; co-chaired the 1980 Reagan/Bush campaign.

B. 12-27-1934, Larisa Semyonovna Latynina, Soviet gymnast was the first woman athlete to win nine gold medals in the Olympic Games, which along with 5 silver and 4 bronze medals made her the winningest athlete, male OR female in Olympic history.

QUOTES DU JOUR

COCHRAN, JACQUELINE:
"I might have been born in a hovel, but I determined to travel with the wind and stars."
-- Jacqueline Cochran in The Stars at Noon. Ms Cochran, a foundling, was raised in terrible poverty in Florida. She worked at menial jobs, finally got her beauty operator's license, built up a beauty empire, took up flying to promote her business, and became a self-made millionaire even though she was, because of her lack of childhood education, almost functionally illiterate. She became the foremost pilot of her day and held more air records than any other man OR woman.
