08-29 DATES, ANNIVERSARIES, and EVENTS

B. 08-29-1769, Rose Philippine Duschesne, French-born nun who established the first free school west of the Mississippi.

B. 08-29-1815, Anna Ella Carroll, writer and publicist for Union cause during the Civil War. She is best known for her pamphlet which outlined the proposition that the Southern states would resume their original places in the United States once the rebellion of the Civil War was over, precisely the course adopted by Abraham Lincoln in superseding Congress in the conduct of the war.
She also claimed to have developed the plan to invade the South along the Tennessee river. Historians disagree about her value, most dismissing her out of hand.
Her tombstone reads "Maryland's Most Distinguished Lady." However, she died poor and anonymous in 1893.

B. 08-29-1848, Sarah Barnwell Elliott, the co-founder and president of the Tennessee Equal Suffrage Association. SBE was the first woman to address her state's legislature.

B. 08-29-1882, Connie Myers Guion helped organize and was chief of staff of the pioneering Cornell Clinic and the first woman in the U.S. to become a full professor of clinical medicine.

B. 08-29-1945, Wyomia Tyus, Afro-American U.S. sprinter who was the first person to win Olympic gold medals in back-to-back competitions: the 100m dash in 1964 and in 1968, setting a new world's record the second time.

B. 08-29-1948, Carol Bartz, American CEO and chair of Autodesk, one of the world's largest manufacturers of computer-design software.

Event 08-29-1974: 600 Catholic nuns adopt a resolution calling for the ordination of women priests in the Roman Catholic Church.

Event 08-29-1989: In a special election, Ileana Rose Lehtinen (R-FL) becomes the first Cuban-American elected to the U.S. Congress.
