B. 08-29-1769, Rose Philippine Duschesne, French-born nun who
established the first free school west of the Mississippi.
B. 08-29-1815, Anna Ella Carroll, writer and publicist for Union
cause during the Civil War. She is best known for her pamphlet which outlined
the proposition that the Southern states would resume their original places
in the United States once the rebellion of the Civil War was over, precisely
the course adopted by Abraham Lincoln in superseding Congress in the conduct
of the war.
She also claimed to have developed the plan to invade
the South along the Tennessee river. Historians disagree about her value,
most dismissing her out of hand.
Her tombstone reads "Maryland's
Most Distinguished Lady." However, she died poor and anonymous
in 1893.
B. 08-29-1848, Sarah Barnwell Elliott, the co-founder and president
of the Tennessee Equal Suffrage Association. SBE was the first woman
to address her state's legislature.
B. 08-29-1882, Connie Myers Guion helped organize and was chief
of staff of the pioneering Cornell Clinic and the first woman in the U.S.
to become a full professor of clinical medicine.
B. 08-29-1945, Wyomia Tyus, Afro-American U.S. sprinter who was
the first person to win Olympic gold medals in back-to-back competitions:
the 100m dash in 1964 and in 1968, setting a new world's record the second
time.
B. 08-29-1948, Carol Bartz, American CEO and chair of Autodesk,
one of the world's largest manufacturers of computer-design software.
Event 08-29-1974: 600 Catholic nuns adopt a resolution calling
for the ordination of women priests in the Roman Catholic Church.
Event 08-29-1989: In a special election, Ileana Rose Lehtinen
(R-FL) becomes the first Cuban-American elected to the U.S. Congress.
